Many credit cards offer a very basic level of travel insurance covering cancellation and (sometimes) medical assistance, however they can be vague and don’t offer much information as to where to turn in case of an emergency, as well as having limitations of how much of your travel arrangements need to be purchased on your credit card to qualify for cover.

Some important questions you need to check when discussing Travel Insurance:

• Will you have a 24/7 emergency medical and travel assistance service you can call from anywhere in the world if something goes wrong?

• Does your travel insurance provider offer a comprehensive emergency assistance service by an Australian-based company?

• If you have an existing medical condition, is it excluded from cover or can the condition be covered by paying an additional premium?

• Will your additional expenses be covered if you have a sick or injured relative and need to come home?

• Do you know what your excess will be if you have to make a claim?

• Have you checked there is enough cover for any personal items?

• Will you be covered for the activities you are planning – snowboarding, motorbike riding, bungy jumping, white water rafting?

• If your rental car is damaged and you need to pay the car rental company an excess – will that be covered?

• Are you aware of the exclusions, limitations and age restrictions of your insurance – for example is there a cap on emergency medical expenses due to your age or will you be covered if you are travelling for business?
