Overseas holidays and business trips are once again on the agenda between Australia and New Zealand: but it’s not as simple as just booking a flight. Here’s a handy checklist to follow in the week leading up to your Trans-Tasman voyage.

  1. Register your details with NZ Goverment. This confirms that your journey will be quarantine-free, and once you’ve completed the form
  2. Download the NZ COVID Tracer app for iPhone or Android ahead of your trip. You can use this to check-in at venues across New Zealand for contact tracing purposes.
  3. Complete an Australian Government ‘travel declaration’. Registering your journey with the Australian Government for contact tracing purposes confirms you won’t need to quarantine on arrival in Australia.
  4. Check your passport expiry. New Zealand’s latest advice is that temporary visitors must enter using a passport valid for one month beyond the date they intend to depart.

A couple of basics:

Phone and Internet

Mobile coverage is not available in some rural and wilderness areas. It is recommend you speak to your phone service provider prior to leaving Australia. Free WiFi hotspots are found in main cities only and can be sporadic throughout the rest of the country.

Health and Safety

New Zealand is a safe country for travelling. We do however recommend purchasing Travel Insurance to protect your company and employees travelling intrastate, interstate and abroad for business..

Visas and Currency

Australian’s must request an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) prior to arriving in New Zealand. The unit of currency is the dollar (NZ$). All major credit cards can be used, with Visa and MasterCard accepted most widely.

How COVID-19 cases will be manged with the Trans-Tasman travel bubble.

Like New Zealand’s four-tiered lockdown alert system, the traffic light system will allow different responses and restrictions depending on how many cases of COVID-19 each end of the travel door is experiencing.

Green Light

The green light, or Quarantine-Free Travel (QFT), will see flights to and from Australia likely to continue. It includes cases detected at the border and has a low risk of further transmission.

Orange Light

The orange light, or QFT Pause, will see flights between the affected state or states paused for up to 72 hours. This will occur when there is a case of unknown source, but is most likely linked to the border.

Red Light

The red light, or QFT Suspend, will see a state enter a longer-term lockdown. This will occur when there are multiple cases of an unknown source. Flights to and from the affected state or states may be suspended for an extended period.
