Luxury below the surface – an underwater experience

There is certainly a lot that we don’t know about our oceans. In fact, for the most part, we can only describe life under the surface as isolated, mysterious and quiet.

While scientists continue to discover new and wonderful ocean creatures and elements, our fascination with the water never wavers. As such, clever architects from around the world have designed a number of underwater hotel experiences that give the impression you are in another world.

Away from the hustle and bustle of a normal hotel, you can take time to relax in an environment where your neighbour is more likely to be a clown fish than another human.

Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai

In recent times, Dubai has become synonymous with simply breathtaking megastructures on land. However, never to take a backward step, Dubai is now home to the spectacular Underwater Suites at Atlantis hotel.

The resort takes inspiration from the mythical lost city of Atlantis, plunging hotel guests metres below the surface among around 65,000 marine animals. With large windows scattered around the suite, it is easy to be swept into scenes from ‘The Little Mermaid’ with a myriad of creatures both big and small swimming past.

Wake up and draw the curtains not to a concrete city but to an underwater world where time is irrelevant and relaxation can take top priority.

Of course, being Dubai, nothing is simple. This man-made island resort also features more than a kilometre of white sand beaches, a waterpark and crystal-clear views back to the shiny skyline and the vast Arabian Sea.

Jules’ Undersea Lodge, Key Largo, Florida

With its warm and humid climate, there is nothing better than spacing the Florida summer into a cool undersea cove. Named after the legendary author Jules Verne who wrote Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, this lodge is actually the oldest underwater hotel in the world – a true leader in underwater accommodation.

Interestingly, the room at the Jules’ Undersea Lodge was once a research lab off the coast of Florida. However, with substantial renovation and innovation, guests can scuba dive 21 feet below the surface for a romantic getaway.

Complete with hot showers, a full kitchen and a chef on call, you can relax with a view out to the world’s greatest movie – the ocean. While you have to be adventurous to get to this location, it is certainly worth the effort!

Pemba Island, Zanzibar: The Manta Resort

When many people think of Africa, they picture wild safaris with lions, zebras and giraffes. While this side of the continent is world-famous, Africa also has a beautiful coastal element, with Pemba Island as a classic example.

At the Manta Resort, your hotel room is actually a private island in itself, a three-tiered platform with an underwater room dedicated to viewing the world from below. From the comfort on your island deck, you can relax and recharge while watching the calming waters of Zanzibar flow past.

If you fancy taking a leap of faith, there is also the chance to climb to the top of the floating island and jump into the clear water below. This is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with a private island and an endless vista of bright blue ocean.
