Do you find yourself scrolling through Instagram, dreaming about the amazing experiences that friends and even complete strangers post about? Living vicariously through Instagram is all well and good on a rainy commute, but how about becoming the one that posts all about their latest travel adventure?
Although you don’t go on holiday for the ‘likes’ and ‘hearts’, posting on social media is now part and parcel of travel culture. There’s an element of making your family and friends jealous, but using platforms such as Instagram can be a great record of where you’ve been and what you’ve done.
So, if 2018 is going to be the year that your Instagram profile goes viral, where are the top destinations you need to go? Also don’t forget to follow FBI Travel before you go!
Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand
Search #newzealand on Instagram and you’ll no doubt see countless images of snow-capped mountains and Hobbiton. However, we reckon the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are just as impressive!
Located just over two hours south of Auckland, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are home to Arachnocampa luminosa, a native glowworm that illuminates the underground cave system. Regardless of the weather outside, you can hop in a boat, and be led around the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto.
Your expert guide will provide insight into how the glowworms produce their fascinating light, as well as information on the historic and cultural significance of the ancient cave system. Over the 45-minute tour, you’ll also get to see an array of spots for photos – perfect for posting on Instagram!
Burj Khalifa, Dubai
It’s pretty hard to believe how fast Dubai has developed over the last 20 years. From barren desert to world economic powerhouse, Dubai is now home to countless Instagram-worthy locations including the Palm Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab and the Dubai Fountain. However, there is one spot that literally stands heads and shoulders above the rest – the Burj Khalifa.
Since 2008, the 829.8m Burj Khalifa has been the tallest structure in the world, taking over Taipei 101. Of course, this isn’t the only record the tower holds. It has the world’s highest outdoor observation deck (452m), world’s highest nightclub (144th floor), world’s highest restaurant (442m) and world’s highest firework display during New Year.
It certainly goes without saying that the view from the Burj Khalifa will form the basis of your latest Instagram post. Whether it’s of the bright lights of Dubai at night or the sheer cityscape stretching into the desert during the day, your photo is bound to be spectacular. The view from the Burj Khalifa can’t be replicated anywhere around the world, highlighting why this UAE hotspot needs to be on your luxury destination list in 2018!
If it’s not travel posts on Instagram, then it’s certainly a photo of food. Of course, the beauty of going overseas is that you can combine the two and really become the envy of everyone you know.
Stopping off in London for a few days? Be sure to check out London’s healthiest restaurant – Redemption. Located in both Notting Hill and Shoreditch, Redemption was established to push the culinary boundaries, producing food that not only tasted great, but was also good for your body.
The menu isn’t short of options, with vegan, sugar-free, and wheat-free dishes – and even an alcohol-free bar. Test your tastebuds with the pulled barbecued ‘pork’ jackfruit and summer slaw, for example. It’s so familiar as a dish, but Redemption’s healthy twist changes the game. Even the most sceptical meat lovers might have a change of heart!
Another great element of Redemption is that the restaurants have a zero-waste policy and aim for a positive environmental footprint – benefitting both you and the planet.
Vancouver Public Library Central Branch, Canada
Vancouver continues to be a popular destination for Australians, using the British Columbia city as a gateway to the snow-capped mountains of Whistler or a cruise up the passage towards Alaska. This said, if you have a few days to relax in the city, definitely take time out to explore the Vancouver Public Library Central Branch.
If you’re wondering why a library is on this list, bear with us, it might be the stunning star of your next Instagram post! Designed by Vancouver architect George Grant, the library is in the style of Romanesque Renaissance, including a domed Ionic portico and French mansard roof.
From the outside, the building looks straight out of Ancient Rome – Colosseum-type architecture that stands out compared to the more modern fixtures of Vancouver. The inside is just as good – the sun filtering through the hundreds of windows on the roof, creating beautiful shadows and pockets of light. You certainly won’t need a filter to make the Vancouver Public Library Central Branch look radiant on your Instagram!
Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo
Can you imagine 2,500 people crossing the road at the same time? Well, you can see it for yourself at the famous Shibuya Crossing. Tokyo is a massive, cosmopolitan city, but this particular location really highlights how big it actually is. Every few minutes sees a rush of people from every direction, with tourists walking the crossing multiple times to capture it from different angles. While it might be good to capture a photo from inside the crowd, there are several vantage points above the crossing that could be ideal for Instagram.
One of the best spots is the Starbucks. Grab a coffee or cold drink (if it’s the middle of summer), find a window seat and admire the hordes of people traversing the crossing. It might also be cool to come back at night to see the crossing with the backdrop of neon lights and billboards from the bright Japanese skyline.
